After attending the University of Tennessee, Jackie graduated from the University of Alabma in Huntsville, and, like so many in the Butler High School Class of '67, went on to a long career in Education and then some.
The best research that we have on the Class of '67 is that there are only three PHD's from our class and Jacquelyn has one of those.
Dr. Markham enjoys her cats, her poetry, her painting and Nature and has been good enough to take time to write us a synopsis autobiography that is included below.

When I thought about writing my autobiography, I came up with two words that might give a sense of who I now am: creativity and nature. Both of these contribute to my life work as a writer and teacher of writing.
Creativity: I am a writer, a poet, a visual artist, and I play the flute. I call myself a “center for creative expression” as I am totally dedicated to doing what I can to promote cultural enrichment in myself and others. After receiving my Bachelors in English at UAH, I earned my Doctorate and Masters in Creative Writing and American Literature at Florida State University.
Nature: I love to work in the garden, walk on the beach, and watch the sunset and moonrise whenever I can because I’m always collecting images for paintings and poetry. For this reason, I moved to the coast of South Carolina a few years ago with my artist soul mate and we create together in the beautiful low country. The spirit of the place here is incredible--breathtaking views of rivers, marshes, live oaks with Spanish moss, and the sea. Also, since I’m interested in history and culture, historic Beaufort and the Gullah culture that is found on nearby St. Helena Island intrigued me.
My writing & teaching: Besides writing poetry and prose, I keep several journals going: personal discovery, garden, creative, genealogy, and research journals. I’m just a journal lover! I have taught writing and literature in many settings—The University of Georgia for a decade, Georgia Southern, and now, I’m at a regional campus of the University of South Carolina. I’ve taught writing to community groups too. My students have ranged from 3rd grade gifted students to adult learners. I taught English as a Second Language to learners from Mexico to Belarus to Korea to senior poets.
Finally, I’m a cat lover, so I spend much of my time taking care of my three felines, all of whom are becoming somewhat geriatric but enjoying life.
